Most old office chairs end up in landfill because they're built from bonded materials — steel, foam, fabric, plastic, pressurised gas — that standard municipal recycling isn't set up to separate. The biggest lever isn't disposal method, it's buying chairs that last longer and repairing single-part failures instead of replacing the whole chair.
Why are office chairs hard to recycle?
A typical office chair is made of several different materials bonded together — steel or aluminium frame, foam padding, fabric or PU upholstery, plastic components, and sometimes a gas lift containing pressurised gas. Separating these materials for proper recycling is labour-intensive and, in most standard municipal recycling systems, simply isn't set up to happen. This is a large part of why office furniture broadly has a poor recycling rate compared to more easily separated materials like paper or glass.
What actually happens at end of life
Without a deliberate plan, old chairs from a fitout or relocation typically go one of a few ways:
- Landfill — the default outcome when chairs are simply discarded with general waste
- Donation — chairs still in reasonable condition can sometimes go to charities, schools, or community organisations, though this depends on someone actively arranging it rather than it happening automatically
- Resale or secondhand markets — a smaller portion get listed or sold on, particularly higher-quality commercial chairs that still have useful life left
- Component recovery — rare, but some specialist services can strip and recycle specific materials (steel frames, certain plastics) if it's arranged deliberately
What actually reduces this problem
A few practical things make a real difference, in order of impact:
Buy chairs that last longer in the first place. The single biggest lever here isn't what happens at disposal — it's how long the chair stays in service before disposal is even a question. A chair genuinely built for years of daily commercial use (backed by real durability testing, not just a "commercial grade" label) simply generates less waste over its lifetime than a lower-durability chair replaced every two or three years.
Repair rather than replace where possible. Many chair failures — a worn gas lift, damaged castors, a loose mechanism — are single-component issues, not reasons to discard the whole chair. Choosing a supplier who stocks spare parts keeps chairs in service longer.
Plan disposal deliberately, rather than defaulting to landfill. If a fitout or relocation is coming up, building in time to arrange donation or resale for still-usable chairs — rather than treating disposal as a last-minute logistics problem — meaningfully changes the outcome.
Ask suppliers about take-back or recycling programs. Not all suppliers offer this, but it's worth asking directly when planning a large fleet replacement, rather than assuming it isn't available.
The bigger picture
There's no fully "zero landfill" answer here — but there's a meaningful difference between a chair that's replaced every two years because it failed, and one that's still in service (or gets a genuine second life through donation or resale) after a decade. Durability and deliberate end-of-life planning both matter more than any single disposal method.
