AS/NZS 4438 is the joint Australian and New Zealand standard for height-adjustable swivel chairs — the everyday office task chair. It sets minimum requirements for how these chairs perform under testing, covering strength, durability and stability. When a chair is described as “AS/NZS 4438 compliant”, the manufacturer is stating that it meets those requirements.

What does AS/NZS 4438 cover?

The standard is written for height-adjustable swivel chairs used for work — the type with a gas lift, a swivelling seat and a castor base. Its requirements are about whether a chair is fit for sustained daily use:

  • Strength — whether the seat, back, arms and base hold up under heavy and repeated loads
  • Durability — whether components keep working after long periods of simulated daily use
  • Stability — whether the chair resists tipping when someone leans back, reaches or sits on the front edge

It's also the benchmark that independent testing bodies such as AFRDI test chairs against, which is why it comes up so often in government, education and corporate tenders.

Is AS/NZS 4438 compliance the same as AFRDI certification?

No. “Compliant” means the manufacturer states the chair meets the standard. AFRDI certification means an independent body has physically tested the chair and graded it, with Level 6 the rating usually expected for demanding commercial use. Both are useful, but they're different claims. If a tender asks for independent certification, a compliance statement alone may not be enough. Our guide to AFRDI and GECA certification explains the levels in more detail.

What does the year in “AS/NZS 4438:1997” mean?

The number after the colon is the year that version of the standard was published. Specifications and tenders usually quote it in full, so check that the version a supplier quotes matches the one your specification asks for.

Does every office chair need to meet AS/NZS 4438?

The standard is most relevant to workstation and task seating, where people sit and adjust their chair for hours every day. Swivel meeting chairs can also be compliant. For visitor, stackable and lounge seating, ask the supplier what testing the chair has been through rather than assuming the same standard applies.

What should I check in an office chair specification?

  • The standard and year quoted, for example AS/NZS 4438:1997
  • Whether it's a compliance statement or an independent certification, and the certificate number if it's certified
  • The chair's load rating, and whether it covers your heaviest users
  • Whether the tested configuration matches the one you're ordering, since options like bases and arms can differ
